Sussex Village named as one of best in UK

The Telegraph writer Greg Dickinson, wrote the piece, with the headline: ‘There are 6,000 villages in the UK – and this one is the best’

“With a national park, vineyard and one of England’s greatest coastlines on its doorstep, the Sussex village of Alfriston has it all,” He writes.

Resident Adrian Butcher, who is also chair of the Alfriston War Memorial Hall, said: “I don’t think it ever comes as a surprise to residents when we read articles such as this, but it’s always a delight to hear. Yes, Alfriston is set within the most stunning countryside, it is a short distance from an iconic coastline, it has a picturesque high street, the places to eat, stay, and shop are wonderful and eclectic, but above all this is the community, not necessarily immediately obvious to the casual visitor, but it’s there, a solid foundation to this amazing village, reports Sussex World.

Key features

Alfriston is known for its historic charm. It boasts a number of well-preserved, centuries-old buildings with traditional thatched roofs and timber frames. The village has a quaint, timeless feel.

The National Trust owns and operates the Alfriston Clergy House, which is a 14th-century timber-framed Wealden hall-house. It is one of the Trust’s earliest acquisitions and provides insight into medieval rural life.

The Cuckmere River meanders through the village, adding to its scenic beauty. There are lovely walking paths along the river, and it’s a popular spot for picnics and nature walks.

It is is a gateway to the South Downs National Park, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and horse riding. The park’s rolling hills and breathtaking views make it a paradise for nature lovers.
